Police announced last month that they had located and apprehended a person of interest in a fatal motorcycle accident in Orange County, California on August 1, 2016.
According to the Orange County Sheriff’s Department, the fatal accident occurred in Modjeska Canyon, and involved a car and a motorcycle. The motorcycle operator was killed in the collision, and the passenger of the vehicle – a Honda – suffered severe injury. The driver immediately fled the scene.
An investigation into the incident revealed that the Honda had been reported stolen in Santa Ana the same day, and identified Damon Ellery Block as an individual of interest in the case. Despite investigators launching surveillance operations in multiple cities, they were unsuccessful in locating Block. However, extensive media coverage resulted in a tip, which led authorities to a Santa Ana residence where Block was hiding.
At the time of Block’s arrest, authorities noted that he had been charged with multiple crimes stemming from arrest warrants unrelated to the fatal accident. Although Block remains the key person of interest in the case, the investigation is ongoing.
Motorcycle Accident & Injury
The state of California has become a key area of interest for motorcycle enthusiasts, due in large part to its agreeable climate and scenic beauty. In Southern California, where traffic is considered to be some of the most congested in the country, it is not uncommon for drivers to regularly share the roadways with motorcycles, especially in the areas in and around Encino and Los Angeles.
That means that drivers – of both cars and motorcycles alike – must exercise additional caution, especially when navigating congested city streets or freeways.
Unlike other automobile accidents, motorcycle accidents tend to be more severe because riders are exposed to greater physical threats. Although some accidents may only involve minor cuts or bruises, other accidents can involve serious, even debilitating injury, including:
- Broken bones
- Head or skull trauma
- Spinal trauma
- Paralysis
- Severe brain injury
When these types of injuries occur, they can present a number of challenges, especially those that arise from financial obligations. In many cases, those injured in motorcycle accidents require ongoing medical care or lengthy rehabilitation, which can become a challenge due to mounting healthcare costs.
If you or someone you know has been injured in a motorcycle accident, it is important that you seek legal counsel as soon as possible. Only an attorney qualified in this area of law can evaluate your case and determine what, if any, legal action is possible.
