The popularity of electric scooter rental services has really taken off in the last few years, with companies like Bird, Lime, and Spin offering dockless, app-based rentals in cities around the world. But while e-scooters provide a convenient mode of transportation, they also come with a number of safety risks that riders should be aware of, and there has been a 222% increase in scooter-related injuries, as well as 29 fatal accidents in the US since 2018.
Most accidents are related to falls, but 9% are caused by collisions with motor vehicles. The vast majority of victims (60%) suffer head injuries, with 26% of cases classed as severe.
Lack of Rider Training
One of the primary issues with e-scooter rentals is that users are often not required to demonstrate any level of riding proficiency before hopping on. Unlike mopeds or motorcycles, e-scooters can be rented and operated by anyone with a smartphone, regardless of their experience level. This can lead to inexperienced riders losing control of the vehicle and crashing, putting themselves and others in danger. It’s also a factor in drunk-riding accidents.
Inadequate Safety Equipment
As well as a lack of training, e-scooter riders may not be provided with basic safety gear like helmets. While some rental companies do offer helmets for an additional fee, users don’t have to use them and many opt to ride without head protection, significantly increasing their risk of serious injury in the event of a fall or collision. This is particularly concerning given the high center of gravity and relatively unstable nature of e-scooters compared to traditional bicycles.
Dangerous Road Conditions
E-scooters are typically operated on city streets, bike lanes, and sidewalks, which are often riddled with potholes, cracks, and other hazards. One study found that 24% of scooter accidents in Los Angeles were caused by roadway imperfections. These conditions can cause riders to lose control of the vehicle, leading to falls and collisions. Also, e-scooters often share the road with cars, trucks, and buses, putting riders at risk of being struck by larger, less maneuverable vehicles.
Lack of Maintenance and Oversight
E-scooter rental companies are responsible for maintaining their fleets of vehicles, but the sheer number of scooters in circulation makes it difficult to keep up with regular inspections and repairs. This can result in mechanical failures, such as faulty brakes or loose handlebars, which can cause accidents. There is also often a lack of oversight when it comes to ensuring that riders are using the scooters safely and responsibly.
Intoxicated Riding
Like driving a car, operating an e-scooter while under the influence of alcohol or drugs can be extremely dangerous. However, some users may view e-scooters as a “safer” alternative to driving a vehicle, leading them to ride while impaired. This behavior can significantly impair a rider’s coordination, judgment, and reaction time, increasing the risk of crashes and injuries.
While e-scooter rentals offer a convenient and environmentally friendly mode of transportation, they also come with a range of safety risks. Riders should be aware of the potential hazards and take appropriate precautions.
