One of the latest headlines reported by KTLA included the newest wave of electric scooters to hit Los Angeles, citing that soon L.A. will have more of the e-transportation options available than any other city in the U.S.
The Los Angeles Department of Transportation said in a news release on dockless mobility that an additional 26,500 scooters from multiple operators will be available along our city streets. With the popularity of scooters expanding throughout California, the question becomes, how do we keep everyone safe while riding? Unfortunately, the entire country is grappling with the same question.
Who Has The Largest Share of Scooters In California?
NBC Los Angeles announced in February that seven companies have been allowed 3,000 of their e-rides to hit the roads in Venice, Westwood, Sherman Oaks, Koreatown, and Palms.
The major players, however, are contributing double, and even triple that number in scooters each:
- Spin will have 10,500
- Bird will have 6,500
- Lime will have 5,500
At Binder & Associates, our Los Angeles County scooter accident attorneys understand that the uptick in scooters on our streets can mean more injuries for riders who are exposed to driver negligence, the scooter company’s failure to maintain the equipment, and additional dangers.
Injuries Prompt CDC Investigation Into E-Scooters
CNN reported that the Centers for Disease Control is launching a wide-scale study that will be moving throughout the country to observe and understand the accident-related injuries associated with scooters.
Some of the most common injuries that occur during scooter accidents include:
- Abrasions and road-rash
- Bruising
- Broken bones
- Facial fractures and broken teeth
- Head and brain injuries
- Torn muscles and ligaments
- Neck and spine injuries
Our California scooter legislation allows these vehicles to be ridden without helmets by people over the age of 18. And when an accident does occur, whether it is caused by a passing vehicle or from faulty brakes or steering malfunctions, people are getting seriously hurt. Like all injury victims who are hurt in negligent circumstances, our scooter accident attorneys believe they deserve financial compensation for their medical bills and lost wages too.
