Multiple tragic accidents happen often long before recall campaigns are launched. More often than we would like to admit, these accidents sometimes result in deaths. Deadly accidents caused by equipment failure remind us that consumer rights should be protected at all times. Consumers who are impacted should never ignore the fact they have rights and they should have them fought for at all cost.

Serious Accident Prompts Recall

The latest reports involving a serious accident have hit the news early today. According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, several residential hydraulic elevators are being recalled over a possible crushing hazard. The risk is associated with the device’s lack of safeguards when it comes to its doors. Since the doors may remain open while the elevator is operating, someone may be exposed to a crushing risk.

The recall campaign was launched after a residential hydraulic elevator caused a 10-year-old to sustain a catastrophic brain injury. Impacted units include the Elmira Hydraulic residential hydraulic elevators manufactured by Cambridge Elevating and distributed by Coastal Carolina Elevators.

The distributor claims it has received already three reports of incidents involving said elevators. Since they illustrate the device’s lack of safeguards, the recall was issued promptly.

All units come with a manual accordion-style car gate door that comes with vinyl laminate inserts. They also come with a control panel with up and down buttons, telephone, light switch, emergency stop button and power failure light. Impacted units come with “Cambridge Elevating” printed on its push button panel.

Consumers with the recalled elevators in their homes should not wait until an accident has taken place for them to act. According to the CPSC, they must stop using the elevator and contact Coastal Carolina Elevator in order to learn more about how they should proceed to have the features inspected and fixed immediately.

The repair should be carried out for free.

All units of the impacted elevators should be fixed immediately so that potential risks associated with the devices can be avoided. Recalled devices were sold through residential contractors and while few of these elevators have been sold, the serious accident that resulted in life-threatening injuries serves as a reminder that recalled consumer products should not be made available to the public.
