A tragic accident that took place on Memorial Day is now serving as a reminder of how a few seconds can make a major difference.
While the exact factors associated with this particular accident are still under investigation, drivers are often oblivious of the risks associated with distractions mostly because they believe that just a few seconds of distraction won’t do much of a difference. Truth is, it only takes a few quick seconds of diversion to keep the driver from being able to react promptly to avoid an accident.
Too often, motorists are focused on their phones, other electronics, passengers, or even children or pets in the back seat. As a result, the few seconds dedicated to tasks that are not related to driving turn into accidents. When drivers are not alert and focused on what is going on around them, there’s little time or room for maneuvers and accidents are much harder to avoid since the reaction time frame is much shorter. If drivers are serious about making sure that roads are safe, they must always be serious about distracted driving risks.
