California Highway Patrol officers are currently investigating the precise causes of a fatal car accident that has left six people dead. According to investigators, this wreck took place at approximately 4:40 a.m. this past Sunday when the driver of a red Chevy Camaro – 21-year-old Olivia Culbreath – was reportedly driving the wrong way on the westbound 60 Freeway in Diamond Bar. Although the wreckage of this tragic accident made it clear to officers that Culbreath’s vehicle was involved in a head-on collision with a Ford Explorer, they are still not exactly sure at what point another vehicle – a Ford Freestyle – became involved in what officers have described as a “horrific collision.”
While four people were pronounced dead at the scene, two reportedly later passed away at the UCI Medical Center as a result of their devastating injuries. Culbreath, who survived the accident and is currently hospitalized as she receives treatment for a broken femur and a ruptured bladder, is suspected of having been intoxicated at the time of this fatal car accident. In fact, although investigators are awaiting the results of an official blood test to confirm or deny their suspicions of DUI, they have stated that, based on items found in Culbreath’s car following the accident, they believe that she was drunk when this accident occurred.
Culbreath has been officially charged with felony DUI and manslaughter, and additional criminal charges may be filed against her after the results of her blood tests come in.
“This tragedy is 100 percent preventable,” Rodrigo Jimenez, a spokesperson for the California Highway Patrol, stated late yesterday afternoon.
