The latest announcements concerning car safety technology have helped consumers to learn more about the changes to the car safety landscape. But no matter how many times we hear that companies are stepping up their game to make sure everybody is safe, major automakers continue to issue recalls that impact vehicles that could expose consumers to great risk.

The latest recall issued by the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration impacts over 87,000 units of the 2013 through 2015 Chevrolet Malibu vehicles. The impacted units have been known to expose consumers to a series of risks.

According to the federal agency, the vehicles come with Slide or Tilt switches for the vehicle’s roof panels that may not be recessed adequately in order to make sure that the switch is not pressed inadvertently.

If the switch is pressed when the driver is not attempting to, the roof panel may suddenly auto-close unexpectedly, which could cause occupants to be exposed to a pinch injury among others. To prevent any potential personal injuries, the company is urging impacted car owners to keep in mind that they will soon be contacted to have the issue addressed.

GM should be contacting all impacted car owners and as soon as the vehicles are inspected, staff at dealers will be updating the Body Control Module software so that the auto-close feature is removed. The issue should be resolved with the software update.
