According to several news sources, a father and son were riding their bicycles on the westbound lanes of Edison Avenue just west of Fulton Avenue when the 25-year-old driver allowed his vehicle to drift into the bike lane. The 33-year-old father died as a result of his injuries while the 7-year-old son was rushed to the hospital with life-threatening injuries.

According to the California Highway Patrol, the driver took eyes off the road prior to the collision. The reason? He was reading a text message on his phone.

The tragic accident happened because distraction allowed the driver to take his eyes away from the road, the California Highway Patrol. As a result, a life was taken and a child is now in a coma. While the CHP investigates, no further comments regarding the charges are made available.
